Most Upward Bound grants provide four years of funding, but PCC was one of only three UBMS awardees in California to receive a five-year award. Five-year awards are reserved for programs whose scores are within the top 10 percent of applications receiving awards.

Participating school districts include Pasadena Unified School District and the El Monte Union School District.

“Upward Bound is an incredible outreach program for Pasadena City College,” said Joy Brittain, Math/Science specialist. “It gives students the opportunity to learn about college and make use of all the opportunities PCC has to offer.”

Throughout the school year, students have the opportunity to go to tutoring, workshops, and fieldtrips, made possible by PCC’s Learning Center, Teacher Prep

Program, and the Natural Sciences Division. In the summer, participants attend a rigorous residential program at a four-year institution to prepare them for college life.

Graduates from Upward Bound programs were accepted for admission to UCLA, UC Berkeley, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal Poly Pomona, and other top four-year schools, as well as PCC.
