To be eligible to participate in the program, students must be first-generation, and low-income. By first-generaton we mean that neither parent has earned a 4-year college degree or higher at the time the student is to enter the program. As for the income requirement, the student's family's household income must fall within the guidelines set by the program and the U.S. Department of Education. This will be determined during the application process.
Yes we do. But it is important to remember, MSUB is an academic enrichment program, not a recreational service. Most of our field trips are actually field explorations to get a better understanding of the particular academic topic we may be investigating. Others may include college trips, or visits with scientific laboratories or musuems.
No, the program is open to all that are eligible. The program is as diverse as the community it serves.
We offer very comprehensive services designed to maximize your student's chances for success in high school and college. These include, but are not limited to- School Site Tutoring, Saturday Enrichment Activities, College Campus Visits, Academic Advising and Counseling, College Application and Financial Aid Application Assistance, Cultural Activities, Hands-on Science, Math, and Technology Activities, Mentoring, Social Activities, 5-week Summer Enrichment Academy, and Parent Workshops.
MSUB selects scholars on the basis of recommendations by teachers, counselors, social service agencies and others acquainted with the scholars' goals and abilities, and through an interview conducted by the project staff. Scholars must be willing to work hard in school, and have a desire to attend college after high school graduation.
Although this program may not guarantee it. Most students who enter this program end up where they want to go because they are dedicated to the program and take advantage of the many resources we provide: including college workshops, fee waivers, oppurtunities to speak with alumni/students of the university you want to go to, and more. We give you various helpful tools and motivation, but you also have to try your best. That includes your grades in school, extra curriculars, and any other ways that will make you an well-rounded candidate the colleges look for.
