Defining Assessment

Assessing Student Learning Outcomes requires clearly focused SLOs and and includes data from a variety of areas.

  1. Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning. It involves:
    • making our expectations explicit and public;
    • setting appropriate criteria and high standards for learning quality;
    • systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well performance matches those expectations and standards; and
    • using the resulting information to document, explain and improve performance.
  2. Assessing instruction involves:
    • student metacognition
    • pedagogy
    • curriculum
    • success in student learning
  3. Assessing student services involves
    • activities
    • services
    • attitudes, perceptions and satisfaction
    • actual outcomes
  4. Assessment consists of a variety of data and methods:
    • direct
    • indirect
    • quantity
    • qualities
  5. Assessment answers important questions and involves more than just accessible numbers of factoids
  6. Assessment contributes to learning in the process of the assessment
  7. Assessment closes the loop by using data to improve courses, curriculum. program and services.
