Dr.
Sarafian began his PCC career as Administrative
Dean for instruction, during which time he helped
fuse PJC and Muir JC into a single 2-year college.
1966 - Several campus structures were completed and dedicated:
The Campus Center Building
The Women's Gym
The College Bookstore and Bank
The Planetarium (part of the Astronomy Building)
The East wing of the Robbins (R) Building--named for and dedicated to Catherine Robbins, previous PCC President. The West portion was constructed shortly thereafter.
The Marvin Building (V Building) - a vocational classroom building named for Howard Marvin, Director of Vocational Education at PJC from 1928-61.
1967 - The Pasadena Area Junior College District was formed as an entity separate form the Pasadena Unified School District. The name became Pasadena Area Community College District in 1970. With the formation of an autonomous college district, the President's title became Superintendent-President.
Highlights of Dr. Sarafian's tenure as PCC President:
He worked with the Southern California Consortium for Community College Television, a group of 18 colleges that first introduced instructional television to the region.
Attendance doubled to 28,000 students, with 500 faculty on staff. This included Dr. Sarafian's dedication to increasing enrollment of Hispanic students. He personally encouraged Jaime Escalante to persevere in his English studies.
He helped to establish PCC's Community Adult Training Center (now the Community Skills Center).
He secured funds to build a Paramedical-Sciences Building (U Building) that was completed in 1973.
He received the Ralph Story Award for Outstanding Service to the College.
He founded EOP&S at Pasadena City College.
1969 - The yearly student parking fee at PCC was $10.
Sarafian visualized a 5-story parking structure that would handle 1,300 cars.
"My goal through all these years has been to give unstintingly of my time and ability to make this College a premier college...It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve this District and observe the thousands of students who have benefited by the excellence of the program at Pasadena City College."
