The Special Education curriculum is designed to train and place you into a special education paraprofessional position in the public or private sector. Settings vary significantly in the age of student served (infants, toddlers, preschoolers, elementary age, secondary age, and adults) and types of disabilities served (deaf, blind or visually impaired, severely emotionally disturbed, mobility-impaired, communication disorders, etc.). 


Program Options


The Special Education Certificates will train you for a culturally sensitive and family-focused perspective that emphasize the values of individual differences. Students must complete this curriculum with a 'C' or better grade; additional requirements include TB and fingerprint clearances.

Certificates of Achievement

Our Certificates of Achievement give you the knowledge and training you need to enter a specialized career or enhance your skills for advancement in your job. Designated certificates (18+ units), combined with the completion of General Education coursework may also be applied to an Associate Degree to further increase your employability.

Associate in Science Degree

The AS degrees in Career Technical Education prepare you with the unique skills needed to enter a specialized career field. You may also choose to continue your studies and earn a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

When earning an AS degree in Special Education, you will choose one of the above Certificate of Achievements as your major. In addition to the Certificate Requirements, you will need to complete the general education requirements for an AS degree.


Occupational Skills Certificate

Earning an Occupational Skills Certificate develops your job skills in a special area of occupational education in a short period of time. Successful completion may certify that you are prepared with job entry skills and/or skills to upgrade or advance in an existing career.

Careers in Special Education


There is a high demand for Special Education Assistants in both public and private settings. These Certificates prepare you for employment as a paraprofessional, under the direction of certified and/or licensed professionals.

The certificates are often a beginning step for students transferring and pursuing careers as: Special Education Teaching Credentials, Occupational Therapist, Child Life Specialists, etc.
