Annual Juried Student Exhibition

December 2, 2009 - January 22, 2010 (The Gallery is closed for the holidays, December 19 - January 10. The gallery will be open on a reduced schedule from January 11 - 22. Please call 626-585-7238 for the gallery's January hours of operation.)

Juror: Jan Tumlir, art writer and independent curator.

Each year, the Division of Visual Arts and Media Studies invites a distinguished art professional to select and install an exhibition based on an open call for recent student work in all media. They also award cash prizes to a few selected artists. This year's juror was Jan Tumlir, a writer and independent curator who has organized several exhibitions featuring Southern California-based artists over the past decade. Tumlir's critical writing on art and popular culture has been widely published; he is a regular contributor to Artforum, Frieze, X-Tra and other art journals. He has written and edited museum catalogues for artists including Jennifer Pastor, David Bunn and John Divola. Tumlir teaches art theory, film theory and related courses at both Art Center College of Design and UCLA.

Tumlir awarded prizes to four student artists: First prize went to Katelyn Hall for three works in the show, including her installation titled “Photocopy Your Face," which includes a photocopier in the gallery with an invitation to gallery visitors to do just that; Sarah Lindsay, second place, for her untitled abstract paintings and an outdoor sculpture; Pat Pickett, third place, for colored ink drawings on digital photographs; and Kyle Irvin, fourth place, for stoneware clay ceramics, including his “Homage to Jeff Koons," a small ceramic version of Koons' famous sculpture of a balloon dog.
