Archive Exhibit: Summer Student Exhibition: Linda Brody-Strassle: CREATIVE MYTHOLOGY

June 21 - June 26, 2008

Acrylic Painting of Tree in blues and browns

Sunday, June 22 – Thursday, June 26, 2008

Every year, funded by a grant from The Pasadena Art Alliance, the gallery offers a Summer Exhibition Series that gives students an opportunity to create their own art exhibit. This unique program provides our students with an opportunity to practice all the steps an artist has to take in order to mount a successful exhibition. Through the Art 75 course, students learn exhibition design techniques and curatorial practice from directly experiencing the planning, installation and promotion of a gallery show of their own work.

Please join us for the first show of this summer series, by Linda Brody-Strassle: Creative Mythology

Opening reception Saturday, June 21, 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Paintings, tapestries and prints in Linda Brody-Strassle’s Creative Mythology (title borrowed from Joseph Campbell’s The Masks of God) are expressionist surrealist inspired works with images from many sources, including ancient and modern world mythology and religions, literature, music, philosophy, science, dreams, fairy tales, history and nature.

The artist states: “For those disillusioned with old beliefs, including everything from traditional religious dogmas to the American dream, I hope to draw the imagination towards new creative mythologies.” Her pieces and related titles and texts expressly invite whimsical collaboration in this enterprise, at the boundaries between consciousness and sleep, sanity and madness.

The pieces are intended to speak for themselves. Regarding the titles, she quotes artist Odilon Redon: “A title is justified only when it is vague and even aims confusedly at the equivocal. My drawings inspire, and are not to be defined. They determine nothing. They place us, as does music, in the ambiguous realm of the undetermined. They are a kind of metaphor…” The accompanying texts, Linda Brody-Strassle explains, are provided to add in their own way to the creative dialogue and to inspire metaphorical thinking. She also invites viewers to participate in the creation of alternative titles for her pieces.

Linda Brody-Strassle was born in Pasadena, has a BA in Music from Mt. St. Mary’s College, a MA in Philosophy from the Claremont Graduate School and a JD from the Cornell University Law School. After practicing law for over 20 years, she is now devoting herself full-time to an artistic career. Creative Mythology is her debut solo exhibition.

Gallery hours: Sunday – Thursday, noon – 4:00 pm
