Shung Shim Kim: Harmony between Serenity and Movement and Bridget Mroczkowski: Paintings opens Saturday, July 12th with a reception from 5-7pm. The exhibition continues through July 19th. Pasadena City College Art Gallery is located at 1570 E. Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena. Gallery hours are Sunday through Thursday, 12-4pm.
Shung Shim Kim's most recent work is inspired by intuition and the conversion of cognition in mundane surroundings. She focuses on the conversion of spaces, points of view, colors and concepts, and tries to achieve her own pure visual vocabulary. The result, Movement in Serenity, is a dynamic set of works made unique by choices of positioning in positive and negative space, merging eastern and western philosophy, and balancing the silent and the dynamic.
Kim majored in Business Administration which she sees as a balance-focused pursuit. In her art, she also strives for balance: in colors, compositions, space, tones, and thoughts. By balancing these elements, as well as through incorporating role-playing games with surrounding elements, Kim feels her works lead her to genuine beauty.
Shung Shim Kim immigrated from Seoul, Korea in 1979. She received her B.S. in Business Administration from California State University Los Angeles, and is currently studying Painting at Pasadena City College.
Bridget Mroczkowski’s paintings range from oil portraits to small watercolors as she attempts to get down to the bare bones of figurative representation through these various mediums. Her oil portraits and paintings explore painting as an act of urgency; attempting to wrestle with the sometimes violent, sometimes passive subject matter and the use of the medium to document this struggle and bring it to some kind of conclusion.
Mroczkowski’s smaller watercolors are influenced by Chinese ink paintings, in that every brush stroke counts. Making her work as simple yet effective as possible leads it to a nearly childlike essence.
Mroczkowski has lived in Los Angeles for four years and is from Ohio. She earned a BA in Studio Art from The College of Wooster and continues to take art classes at Pasadena City College.
