Annual Juried Student Exhibition

Juror: Gail Swanlund, Co-director, program in Graphic Design, CalArts.
Each year, the Division of Visual Arts and Media Studies invites a distinguished art professional to select an exhibition based on an open call for recent student work in all media. This year's juror was Gail Swanlund, an artist, graphic designer and writer who co-directs the program in Graphic Design at CalArts. She is a partner in STRIPE Studio, whose clients include the American Center for Design, Chronicle Books, Dreamworks, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Ogilvy & Mather Brand Integration Group, Sony Music, Telemundo, UCLA and USC. Swanlund has also collaborated with many fine artists, including Paul McCarthy, Laura Owens and Jennifer Steinkamp.
The award winners were: Misaki Miyazawa, represented in the show by an abstract acrylic painting, Encouragement, and another work, Knocking on New Doors, an ink drawing that incorporates buttons and thread; Thu Pham, who has three works in different media included in the show; David Matthew Davis, for Smelly T-Shirt with Dog, a piece with a materials description that includes an antique clothes hanger and "body odor"; and Christina Tang, for the ink wash drawing Dialogue Among Pomegranates and Other Inanimate Objects High in Antioxidants.
