mary geerSoftball Season Ends, Asst. Coach Mary Geer Retires

The Pasadena City College softball team closed the 2014 season Tuesday with a 6-2 loss to co-South Coast Conference champion East Los Angeles. While the Lancers finished their first season under a new head coach in Monica Tantlinger, the program honored long-time assistant coach Mary Geer as she announced her retirement from PCC softball.

The Pasadena City College duo of sophomore Shannon Cheung and freshman Connie Peng raised the bar for Lancers women's swimming with their overall performance at the South Coast Conference Championships held April 17-19 at Mt. San Antonio College. Overall, the team smashed six conference records and 11 school records.

In the history of South Coast Conference swimming, no women's relay squad had ever eclipsed the four minute mark in the 400-yard medley relay. That was until four Pasadena City College swimmers blew a 14-year-old SCC record right out of the water Thursday on the opening day of the SCC Championships at Mt. San Antonio College.

Pasadena City College men's basketball forward Taj Spencer traded one Lancer mascot for another as he signed a scholarship offer to attend California Baptist University in Riverside. Spencer was an All-State and All-South Coast Conference First Team selection in his only season at PCC in 2013-14.

Freshman reliever John Flores took advantage of his first start on the hill this season Tuesday, but his efforts couldn't stop the Pasadena City College baseball team from coming up short against visiting Irvine Valley, 5-3, in a non-conference game. The contest was played at Brookside Park's Jackie Robinson Memorial Field and appropriately on the 67th anniversary of PJC alumnus and MLB Hall of Famer Robinson breaking the color barrier in professional baseball with his rookie appearance for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The Pasadena City College women's track and field team could continue its recent string of individual state champions with the emergence of sprinter Breanna Clark. The sophomore ran the state's fastest time this year in the 400 meters, winning the event at the Mt. SAC Relays with a 55.33 seconds mark on Saturday.

First baseman Audrey Serna slugged a solo home run, the first all season by a Lancer at home, but it wasn't enough as the Pasadena City College softball team lost to Glendale, 6-4, in a non-conference, make-up game played Saturday at Robinson Park. The game was originally scheduled for March 1 but was rained out.

Seven swimmers had better seed times in the 200-yard freestyle than Pasadena City College freshman Mohammad Esmaeilian as the final heat took place Saturday at the 14th Pasadena Invitational. By the end of the heat, it was Esmaeilian, from the eighth lane, who scored an improbable but stirring win in the event in a personal-best time of 1 minute, 45.13 seconds.

Angeline Jefferson, a member of the 2012-13 Pasadena City College women's basketball team, passed away Sunday after her valiant fight with cancer. She was 21. Jefferson battled back from Stage 2 Hodgkins lymphoma to play as a sophomore reserve guard for the Lancers two seasons ago. She was on target to graduate from PCC later this year.

Last year, Pasadena City College women's track and field runner Christina Shamirian missed out on qualifying for the CCCAA State Championships despite finishing in eighth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Southern California finals meet. This year, the sophomore is determined to reach state and her steeplechase victory on her home track Friday during the 71st Pasadena Games was a step in that direction. College-only events took place all day at Robinson Stadium.

After last qualifying for the postseason a decade ago, the Pasadena City College men's basketball team figured it might as well make the most of a rare trip to the playoffs. The 12th-seeded Lancers won a defensive struggle, upsetting No. 5 Saddleback, 53-49, Saturday night in Mission Viejo. PCC advanced to Round 3 of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

There's something about playing in Lancaster that brings out the best in the Pasadena City College baseball team. For the fifth opening-season trip to Antelope Valley College in the last six years (rained out in 2010), the Lancers beat the host Marauders for the team's first win of the season on Friday. For the third time this season, PCC was left scoreless as visiting Los Angeles Pierce won 1-0 Friday in a non-conference game at Robinson Stadium.

With 30 minutes left in its home opener Friday, the Pasadena City College women's soccer team and head coach Reggie Rivas might have been out of options when reserve freshman goalie Angie Ulmer left the game with an injury. The Lancers were already without sophomore regular starter Tatiana Sanchez due to an illness, but there was no worries when Ulmer went down.
