Men's Soccer Wins Home Opener, 2-1, Over Oxnard

Two Pasadena City College student-athletes played in the first two sporting events held on the new Sprinturf artificial grass surface at Robinson Stadium. They played in different sports, and with different results.

Aaron Galvan and Gerardo Garcia each assisted on goals to lead the PCC men's soccer team to a 2-1, non-conference win over Oxnard College Tuesday afternoon. Galvan is the placekicker and Garcia is the punter on PCC's football team that lost its home opener, 27-26, against LA Valley on Saturday.

Pasadena improved its record to 1-1 overall, while Oxnard is 1-2-1.

The Lancers broke a 1-1 tie in the 57th minute after a long shot by Galvan (forward, Arcadia High) was initially saved by Oxnard goalie Tom Ortez. Antonio Cortez got to the loose ball first, then teammate Sargis Agaronian blasted in the rebound for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

PCC outshot Oxnard, 19-7, especially dominating play over the last 40 minutes. However, a brilliant performance by Ortez, who had 12 saves, kept the game close for the Condors.

Pasadena took a 1-0 lead in the game's fifth minute as Garcia sent a long, lead pass to Rudy Bailon, who then knocked in a 20-yard shot past Ortez. Bailon, a midfielder, had eight of PCC's shots in a strong offensive effort.

Garcia, a defender from South El Monte High, and defender Sergio Rodriguez (Cathedral HS) each kept Oxnard's offense in check. PCC goalie Sergio Ramirez, one of only two sophomores on the 2006 roster, only had to make three saves. Rodriguez was robbed of a goal in the 60th minute when his point blank shot was stopped by Ortez.

Oxnard tied the game at 1-1 in the first half (37th minute) on a goal by Jesus Cazares.

PCC is coached by Director of Soccer Cherif Zein and Assistant Head Coach Warren Altounian.

The Lancers opened the season on Sept. 1 with a 2-0 loss at Taft. PCC next plays at Cypress Thursday, Sept. 7 in a 3 p.m. non-conference match.
