Sports in the NewsThree From State Champion Women's Basketball Team Receive Scholarships
Three sophomores from the 2008-09 Pasadena City College state champion women's basketball team are headed to four-year universities with playing scholarships, according to PCC head coach Joe Peron. Two-time, All-State forward and All-CCCAA Tournament selection Easter Faafiti will transfer to Gallaudet University, considered the nation's leading college for students who are deaf and hard of hearing, in Washington, D.C. The NCAA Division III university is a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. Faafiti, who is legally deaf in both ears, will major in sign language and play for the Gallaudet Bison as a junior for the 2009-2010 season. Faafiti was the 2007-08 Women's Athlete of the Year at PCC as a freshman and finished her two-year Lancers' career as the college's fourth all-time leading scorer with 992 points. She earned the President's Award in May and was a State Farm All-American honorable mention. Faafiti (pictured at state tournament) attended Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg, Calif., before coming to PCC. Another All-CCCAA Tournament selection and shooting guard Melia Basavand has accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Albany (New York), a Division I college. Basavand finished as PCC's all-time leader in 3-point baskets and led the state this past season in that department. Like Faafiti, Basavand twice was selected All-South Coast Conference for the Lancers. Basavand will play for the Great Danes in the American East Conference for her junior season. Basavand is a product of Glendale High. All-SCC sophomore forward Allegra Kohley has committed to Dakota State University (Madison, South Dakota), a NAIA college and member of the Dakota Athletic Conference. Kohley played just one season for the Lancers, but was instrumental in the team's state title run. She hit the game-winning basket with three seconds left in a 95-93 overtime triumph over City College of San Francisco in the state quarterfinals game. Kohley will play her junior season for the Lady T's, starting in October. Kohley, who also participated on the PCC women's track and field team as a thrower, played her prep basketball at Gardena High. PCC sophomore point guard Kinyada Johnson, the MVP of the state tournament, has yet to decide on a four-year college choice, according to Peron. The Lancers finished the '08-09 season with a 33-4 overall record and became the first women's state champion team in PCC history in March when they defeated San Joaquin Delta in the championship game at Fresno's Selland Arena.
