Pasadena City College's 2009-2010 intercollegiate sports season begins Friday, Aug. 28 when the Lancers' women's volleyball, men's soccer, and women's soccer teams open their schedules. Three of PCC's 16 sports teams get the ball rolling for a calendar year that runs more than nine months through May, 2010.

The PCC women's volleyball team, coached by Tammy Silva, open with two matches as part of the PCC Quad Tourney at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. The Lancers take on Cypress at 3 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. match against Santa Barbara City.

The Lancers soccer teams, coached by Cherif Zein, will be on the road, opening the '09 slate in an evening, non-conference doubleheader at Golden West College. The women's team plays at 5 p.m. with the men's season opener at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 5, the PCC football and cross country teams start play. The Lancers football team, winner of the Tremblay Financial Services Bowl last year, travels to face rival Mt. San Antonio College in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut. PCC, coached by James Kuk, will play for the 35th time in a 51-year history between the two teams on the gridiron. The Lancers hope to defeat Mt. SAC for the first time since 2002.

Also on that Saturday, The men's and women's cross country squads, coached by Armand Crespo, participate in the Fullerton Season Opener meet to be run at Fullerton Golf Course. The women's 6-kilometer race begins at 6 p.m. and the men's 8-K starts at 6:30 p.m.

The last of the Fall sports to commence is the PCC women's water polo team. Coached by Terry Stoddard, the Lancers will play several matches during the season-opening Saddleback Tournament in Mission Viejo Friday-Saturday, Sept. 11-12.

The PCC basketball season for both the women's and men's teams begin in November. The women's squad, coached by Joe Peron, is the defending state champion, winning the CCCAA title back in March. The men's team is coached by Mike Swanegan. Schedules for both teams will be released later this month.
