Women's Soccer Team Opens '09 Season 1-1
The Pasadena City College women's soccer team opened the 2009 season on a positive note Friday, but suffered a rocky defeat Monday to leave the Lancers with a 1-1 record after two road matches.
The Lancers downed Golden West, 2-1, Aug. 28 as freshman defender Carlene Abad assisted on both PCC goals. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Abad fed returning All-South Coast Conference First Team midfielder Alexa Weigand for a goal in the opening minute of the second half.
Abad then assisted on the game winner in the 58th minute on a shot by freshman midfielder Cristina Tachiquin. As the Lancers currently are without an eligible goalkeeper, All-SCC Second Team sophomore defender Molly Pink played the entire match as goalie and made 1 save.
On Aug. 31, PCC suffered the worst loss in the school's 13-year history of the sport, beaten by host San Bernardino Valley College, 10-0. The Wolverines were led by Evelyn Calderon with 3 goals as they outshot PCC, 31-5.
The Lancers' Pink played the first half, made 8 saves but because of little help defensively around her, allowed 5 goals. Sophomore midfielder Titha Mejia played the second half, making 5 saves, but also allowing 5 goals in SBVC's onslaught. PCC played the entire match with just 12 players.
Weigand, Pink, Mejia and Maya Kasfy are the only current returning players from the '08 Lancers that finished 10-8-1 last season. Last year's top goal scorer and All-SCC First Team forward Melissa Fudge may join the team at a later date, according to PCC Associate Head Coach Warren Altounian. Cherif Zein began his 13th season as the Lancers' head coach.
PCC's freshmen corps includes midfielder Marina Lesse, who was a 2009 Pasadena Star-News All-Area First Team selection after helping Alverno High win the CIF Division VII title. Lesse scored 14 goals and totaled 21 assists as one of Alverno's senior team captains.
Another top newcomer is defender Lisa Kelley (Monrovia High) who made the '08 All-Area Second Team as a junior. Tachiquin (Pasadena High), Abad (Village Christian), forward Heather French (Village Christian), defender Analuisa Castro (La Salle), midfielder Amy Wallace (Monrovia), midfielder Jodelle Maglaya (Kaimuki, Hawaii), midfielder Claudia Garcia (Garfield), and defender Kimberly Cristobal (San Joaquin Memorial, Fresno) round out the eligible freshmen.
The Lancers don't begin South Coast Conference play until Tuesday, Sept. 29 at LA Harbor College. PCC's next non-conference match is Friday, Sept. 4 as the Lancers host LA Valley College. Game time is 2 p.m. at Robinson Stadium.
