LA Valley Spoils Women's Soccer Home Opener, 2-1
The Pasadena City College women's soccer team suffered its second straight loss, falling to Los Angeles Valley College, 2-1, in the Lancers' home-opening match Friday at Robinson Stadium.
PCC dropped to 1-2 and LA Valley evened its record at 1-1.
The Lancers trailed 1-0 at halftime and eventually, 2-0, before finally getting on the board on a goal by freshman Lisa Kelley, who blasted a shot from 10 yards out after a deflected pass by freshman Cristina Tachiquin (Pasadena HS) in the 75th minute.
Kelley, who missed the last 11 minutes of the first half and the first 23 minutes of the second half due to an injury, re-entered in the 68th minute, sparking PCC's offense. In the first half, Kelley (Monrovia HS) made three straight strong defensive plays as a defender, including a sliding stop to thwart a breakaway by LA Valley's Monic Johnson in the 13th minute.
Unfortunately for PCC during Kelley's absence, LA Valley twice was able to score goals on Lancer defensive breakdowns. With two minutes remaining in the first half, Monarchs' forward Kayta Kroell got behind the PCC defense and scored on a breakaway goal from 20 yards out. LA Valley upped it to 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Gloria Almaraz took a lead pass from Mayra Luis-Juan and put a short shot in the right corner. PCC's defense stopped on the play, thinking there was going to be an offside call, but the referees did not blow the whistle.
Neither team had many scoring opportunites as PCC outshot LA Valley, 12-6. Lancers' goalie Yvette Hernandez, playing her first game of the season, made 3 saves while her counterpart Stephanie Ortega tallied 5 saves.
In the 78th minute, PCC had perhaps its best chance to tie, but Titha Mejia's shot from a short side angle was just wide of the post.
PCC next plays at Oxnard College Friday, Sept. 11 in a 2 p.m. match.
