PCC Cross Country Teams Start Season
The Pasadena City College women's and men's cross country teams opened the 2009 schedule by racing in the Fullerton Season Opener meet at Fullerton Municipal Golf Course Sept. 5. The Lancers women placed 19th out of 26 teams, but most of the field was made up of 4-year university squads.
The men's team placed 18th out of 19 teams. PCC, Glendale, Orange Coast, Mt. San Antonio, Fullerton, Santa Ana, and Long Beach City were the only community college teams in the races that included women's team winner Azusa Pacific and men's winner Cal Poly Pomona.
For the PCC women's squad, freshman Tracee van der Wyk placed 55th individually among 262 runners in their 6-kilometer race. Van der Wyk (Temple City High) ran 24 minutes, 39.9 seconds. The next best Lancer came in 148th place, Rebecca Nunez (freshman, Temple City) at 26:52.
Following Nunez in 151st was Lidia Garcia (freshman, Pasadena HS) at 26:55, then Abby Read (freshman, Mayfield) at 170th in 27:26.6, and Marissa Morales (freshman, Diamond Bar) in 210th at 29:09.
It was a disappointing start to the year for sophomore Ashley Hernandez, who was 223rd at 30:06. Hernandez qualified for the state meet as a freshman and was the Lancers' top runner in 2008.
In the men's 8-K race, returning sophomore Ernesto Rodriguez again established himself as the Lancers' top runner (finished in 60th place at the CCCAA state meet as a freshman) with a 77th place at 28:03.
Freshman Will Zentmyer (La Canada HS) finished at 132nd with a time of 29:13. The rest of the Lancers placed as follows: Herminio Flores (freshman, Los Angeles HS) 141st, 29:23.4; Kevin Cano (freshman, Montebello) 169th, 30:10; Antero Barrantes (Maranatha) 190th, 31:21.9; McKinley Murphy (freshman, St. Francis) 204th, 33:17.8; and sophomore Rosello de Guzman 211th, 36:06.5.
The cross country teams, coached by Armand Crespo, will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 19 at the UC Riverside Invitational.
