Wilia's 5 Goals Lifts PCC To SCC-Opening WWP Win

Wilia's 5 Goals Lifts PCC To SCC-Opening WWP Win image Jade Wilia broke open a close game with 4 second-half goals as the Pasadena City College women's water polo team defeated El Camino, 8-2, Wednesday in the South Coast Conference and home opener for the Lancers.PCC (1-4 overall) never trailed and took the lead for good, 2-1, on a goal by Shannon Adams with 2:23 left in the first half. Wilia, a sophomore team captain, totaled 5 goals to pace the victory. In the third quarter, PCC exploded for 3 goals in a span of 1:29 to break it open at 5-1. Wilia scored two of those goals. Freshman Anneke Forrest twice scored on power plays to round out the Lancers' scoring. Merry Sanders added 2 assists. Frosh goalie Hannah Hogue made 10 saves and 3 steals. She assisted on Wilia's fifth goal on a set-up that followed a timeout called by PCC Head Coach Terry Stoddard. Wilia also made 3 steals. Erica Shaw had both goals for El Camino, now 1-1 and 0-1. At the season-opening Saddleback Tournament Sept. 12, PCC's defense was strong despite a 5-2 loss to Southwestern and a 3-2 setback against Mt. San Antonio. The Lancers have progessively given up less goals in each of their first five matches. PCC allowed 10 to Palomar, 7 to Ventura, 5 to Southwestern, 3 to Mt. SAC and now 2 to El Camino. "We came out a little slow and we made a lot of turnovers in the first half," Stoddard said. "We worked on our passing in the third quarter, and then we clicked with those 3 quick goals. Our team defense has been terrific. This was great for the team to win one at the home pool." Hogue, who made 60 saves at the Saddleback Tourney including her PCC record-setting 21 v. Palomar, has upped her season total to 70 saves. PCC will have a rematch against Mt. SAC, except this time counting toward the SCC standings, when they face-off on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Game time at PCC's Aquatic Center is 3 p.m. [Photo--Jade Wilia gets ready to fire one of her match-high 5 goals in the Lancers' 8-2 win over El Camino Wednesday at the Aquatic Center, image by Richard Quinton.
