Early Scoring Flurry Results In Women's Soccer 3-0 Win Over COS
Sophomore forward Melissa Fudge scored two goals and teammate midfielder Alexa Weigand one in a span of just six minutes early on as the Pasadena City College women's soccer team blanked visiting College of the Sequoias, 3-0, Tuesday in a non-conference match at Robinson Stadium. The Lancers upped their record to 3-2 while COS fell to 1-4-1. PCC dominated most of the match, outshooting the Lady Giants, 20-5.
At the 3-minute mark, Fudge sent a cross pass to Weigand, who blasted in a shot from 15 yards out for what would prove to be all the offense the Lancers needed. Just five minutes later, freshman forward Heather French sent a lead pass to Fudge, who dribbled the ball the next 25 yards before depositing a goal. Barely a minute later, it was Weigand's turn to feed Fudge with a cross pass and one-timer for a commanding 3-0 lead.
Although the Lancers didn't score the rest of the match, they did have plenty of opportunities, including a free kick blast off the crossbar by freshman defender Lisa Kelley. In the 60th minute, Fudge was robbed on a diving play by Sequoias goalie Jeana Nace.
PCC goalie Yvette Hernandez made 4 saves for the shutout, the best being a brilliant stop on a breakaway attempt from Sequoias' Elissa O'Connell just before halftime.
Fudge, Weigand, French, and frosh midfielder Carlene Abad frequently controlled the play in the offensive end, creating opportunities throughout the match. On the defensive end, Kelley was solid as was freshman Analuisa Castro, who broke up a breakaway with just three minutes left in the match.
PCC next hosts Cuyamaca in a 4 p.m. match Thursday, Sept. 24 at Robinson Stadium.
