Mt. SAC Holds Off Lancers Water Polo, 5-3
The Pasadena City College women's water polo team rallied with 2 second-half goals by sophomore Jade Wilia, but fell short against visiting Mt. San Antonio, 5-3, in a South Coast Conference match Wednesday afternoon. The Lancers (1-5, 1-1 in SCC play) cut it to 4-3 on Wilia's second goal just 1:11 into the fourth quarter. PCC nearly tied it with 5:30 left, but couldn't take advantage of a power play as Anneke Forrest's long-range shot attempt was knocked aside by Mt. SAC goalie Alison Johnson. A minute later, the Mounties put the game away with a goal by Amber Meza.
Once again, PCC's top player was freshman goalie Hannah Hogue, who made 11 saves and had a team-high 4 steals. Hogue stonewalled point-blank attempts by Erika Vargas and Vanessa Wiles.
Sophomore Shannon Adams picked up PCC's other goal in the first quarter. Sophomore Merry Sanders added 2 assists. Wilia contributed a block and a pair of steals on defense.
"Both teams improved from when we met at the Saddleback Tournament," PCC Head Coach Terry Stoddard said. "We made some adjustments at halftime and did a better job offensively in the second half. We had some opportunities to tie it. I think had we come through there, the momentum would have remained with us. We know we probably will face Mt. SAC at the conference tournament, so we feel we can match up well with them."
Mt. SAC (3-3, 1-1 in the SCC) had downed the Lancers, 3-2, at the season-opening Saddleback Tournament, Sept. 12.
The Lancers are next scheduled to play at the Cabrillo College Tournament in Northern California Sept. 25-26. They resume conference action on Sept. 30 with a 3 p.m. match at Los Angeles Trade Tech.
