Women's Volleyball Aces LA Harbor, 7 Straight Wins image

The 12th state-ranked Pasadena City College women's volleyball team served a season-high 19 aces to bedazzle visiting Los Angeles Harbor College, 25-7, 25-5, 25-11, for the Lancers' seventh consecutive victory Wednesday night in a South Coast Conference match.

The Lancers are 8-1, having won 24 of 28 games played and sweeping opponents in seven of their matches. PCC has been stingy in moving to 2-0 in the conference. The Lancers have allowed just an average of 8.5 points per game for a 16.5-point average margin of victory per set.

Sophomore libero Marissa Rangel had 4 of her match-high 5 aces during one sideout in the second game. Freshman setter Jessica Xu totaled 16 assists, 3 kills, 3 digs, and 4 aces, using a serving style that let the top of the net, dropping in for points to the dismay of Harbor defenders.

Frosh setter Klaire Blasco added 11 assists and 3 aces and her older sister and outside hitter Patti Blasco had 5 kills, 3 aces and a team-high 6 digs. Returning All-SCC opposite Galia Sotomayor hit 7 kills in just 9 attempts and added 2 aces.

PCC Head Coach Tammy Silva used all 15 players on her roster, including starting outside hitter Nicole Holmes, who scored 5 kills in her only game. Frosh outside hitter Chelsea Umana added 5 kills while first-year middle blocker Jessica Foley continued her strong play of late with 5 kills and 2 blocks. Newcomer Brooke Mataele added 2 kills and 2 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Anita Wang tallied a kill, an ace and 3 digs. Backup libero Cambria Mendez chipped in 4 digs and opposite Miranda Doing had 2 kills.

LA Harbor, a new program under first-year head coach Chrissie Zartman, was led by Mahina Hirahara with 7 digs and Gwen Bird with 3 kills. Harbor fell to 1-2 and 0-1.
