State's No. 8 Women's Volleyball Outlasts Mt. SAC, 3-2

State's No. 8 Women's Volleyball Outlasts Mt. SAC, 3-2 image After earning its highest regular season ranking in school history as the No. 8 team on this week's state Top 25 poll, the Pasadena City College women's volleyball team immediately became a target for those trying to knock the Lancers off their perch.Unranked Mt. San Antonio pushed PCC to the limit Wednesday, but the Lancers showed their pedigree by pulling out a 5-gamer over the host Mounties, 29-31, 25-14, 25-13, 20-25, 15-9. The victory was Pasadena's eighth straight to improve the team to 9-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the South Coast Conference. "This has become a very real rivalry in volleyball," PCC Head Coach Tammy Silva said. "Mt. SAC gets fired up to play us, and we've been playing these type of long, exhausting duels against them since I came to PCC. It was a draining match, but I think it will help us in the long run for the playoffs." Mt. SAC fell to 5-4 and 1-2 in SCC play. The Lancers were led by freshman outside hitter Patti Blasco, who was a consistent .500 hitter in the match with a season-high 29 kills in 54 attempts with just 2 errors. Blasco added 12 digs and 3 blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Holmes added 10 kills, 9 digs and 2 aces while sophomore opposite Galia Sotomayor also recorded 10 kills. At middle blocker, freshman Jessica Foley added 7 kills and 6 blocks (4 solos), while setter Jessica Xu produced a season-high 54 assists. Sophomore libero Marissa Rangel kept up the defensive end with 25 digs to go with 3 aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Anita Wang added 6 digs, and frosh outside hitter Miranda Doing contributed 5 kills and 2 blocks. "Patti again was a huge difference for us," Silva said. "She's a smart player with amazing court vision. She just doesn't make mistakes, and to be able to keep the ball in play so often with as many attempts is remarkable. As a team, we didn't play to the level that I expect, but we won, so we'll take it." The Lancers return home for a Friday, October 2 match against Los Angeles City College. Game time for the conference match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium is 6 p.m. [Photo--Patti Blasco (11) goes up for one of her season-high 29 kills as Pasadena City College won a grueling, 5-game SCC match at Mt.
