Women's Soccer Blanked For 3rd Consecutive Match
Playing without top sophomore scorer Melissa Fudge and quality freshmen Heather French and Marina Lesse, the Pasadena City College women's soccer team suffered its third straight shutout defeat, 4-0, by host Cerritos College Friday in a South Coast Conference match. The Lancers, 3-5 and 0-2 in the SCC, were also blanked by LA Harbor (Sept. 29) and Cuyamaca (Sept. 24) by 2-0 counts.
PCC last scored a goal when it downed College of the Sequoias, 3-0, back on Sept. 22. The Lancers netted all 3 goals in the first nine minutes of that match, meaning the team has gone scoreless now for nearly six hours of action (351 minutes).
Fudge and French, both forwards, each were given red cards in the SCC opener at Harbor for excessive physical play, keeping them out of the Cerritos match (automatic 1-game conference suspension). Lesse, an All-CIF freshman midfielder from Alverno High, was out ill.
PCC goalie Yvette Hernandez put on a valiant effort v. two-time defending state champion Cerritos (8-1-1, 1-1 in SCC play). Hernandez, a freshman from Sante Fe High, made 14 saves and held the Falcons and the game scoreless until the 66-minute mark. The Lancers tried to stay in a defensive shell for Hernandez, but eventually Cerritos scored on a line-drive shot by Nancy Gandarilla. Gandarilla would pick up assists on the next three Falcon goals.
Cerritos outshot the Lancers, 26-1.
Hernandez has been one of PCC's brightspots this season with a 1.83 goals against average and 50 saves made in the six matches she's appeared.
PCC will try to snap its scoreless string Tuesday, October 6 when it hosts East Los Angeles College in a 3 p.m. SCC game at Robinson Stadium.
