Here Comes The Fudge: Her 2 Goals Lifts Women's Soccer To Win

Here Comes The Fudge: Her 2 Goals Lifts Women's Soccer To Win image Melissa Fudge scored a pair of goals, including one with two minutes left to lift the Pasadena City College women's soccer team past East Los Angeles, 2-1, Tuesday in a South Coast Conference game at PCC's Robinson Stadium.Fudge took a lead pass from teammate Alexa Weigand and made a short shot that was blocked before knocking in the game-winning goal on a rebound attempt while inside the goalie box. The victory improved PCC to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the SCC. ELAC dropped to 2-6-2 and 0-2-1 in conference play. In the 12th minute, Fudge stole an errant pass from Huskies' goalie Charlene Flores and knocked in a wide open shot that rolled into the center of the net from 25 yards. The score ended a six-hour long offensive drought by the Lancers (363 minutes) as they were coming off three consecutive shutout losses. PCC goalie Yvette Hernandez received a red card with seven minutes left, but her play in throwing her hands out to stop the ball on a breakaway by ELAC's Sinya Lara at the 30-yard line may have saved the victory. Hernandez received an automatic red card for using her hands outside the goalie box. Coming to the rescue for the Lancers at that point was forward Heather French, who threw on a gold practice shirt over her No. 9 jersey to play the final seven minutes (plus injury time) as PCC's goalie. French made one save, but ended up getting credited with the goalie victory. Hernandez had six saves. While Fudge and Weigand created several scoring opportunites throughout the match, PCC's defenders were able to slow up ELAC's offense, especially sweeper Lisa Kelley and Shadi Moghadam. In the midfield, Weigand, Maya Kasfy, Analuisa Castro and Molly Pink were frequently around the ball, pushing the play back into East LA territory. Fudge leads PCC with 5 goals this season. PCC will next play at Mt. San Antonio College Friday, October 9 in a 4 p.m. SCC match.
