Women's Water Polo Beats Cuesta At 9th Pasadena Bowl Tourney
It started out great for the Pasadena City College women's water polo team at the 9th Pasadena Bowl Tournament Friday. But the Lancers couldn't build on an 11-8 victory over Cuesta, losing the final three games of the six-team, two-day event.PCC (6-10 overall) lost a tough one against Diablo Valley, 6-5, Friday, then suffered defeats against Orange Coast, 13-5, and Citrus, 8-5, on Saturday. Cerritos College, the defending state champions, finished 4-0 in its matches to capture the tournament title.
"We did so many things well against Cuesta, it was really a team victory," said PCC Head Coach Terry Stoddard. "Offensively, though, we lost our focus over the next three matches. We didn't shoot well against Diablo Valley and it cost us a win. We have to get right back to work and prepare for playing some difficult teams this next week."
In the Cuesta win, PCC jumped out to a 5-1 lead, saw the Cougars cut it to as close as 8-7, then scored three straight goals in the fourth quarter to cap the match. Merry Sanders shot from long range was a key goal that extended the Lancers lead to 9-7 and ended a furious Cuesta scoring run.
Early in the match, Shannon Adams scored from a tough side angle on her way to making 3 goals. Adams, a sophomore, added 5 steals in a strong overall effort. Both Jade Wilia and Anneke Forrest each also tallied 3 goals while Matiana Coulson picked up a late goal off the Lancers' bench. Goalie Hannah Hogue backstopped the victory with 9 saves and helped set up two of PCC's scores with long lead passes.
The Lancers take a 3-1 South Coast Conference record into their 3 p.m. match at Long Beach City College Wednesday, October 14. PCC then plays four games at the Citrus College Tournament, including Friday, October 16 matches v. Orange Coast (10:10 a.m.) and Los Angeles Valley (4:40 p.m.). The tournament concludes with two matches against yet to be determined opponents on Saturday, October 17.
