Hogue Does It All, But Chaffey Beats WWP, 5-2

Hogue Does It All, But Chaffey Beats WWP, 5-2 image See Hannah Hogue make a save. See Hannah Hogue make a steal. See Hannah Hogue score? Yes, even the freshman goalie's surprising long-range shot to end the first half got the Pasadena City College women's water polo team on the scoreboard. The Lancers didn't generate much more offense in a 5-2, South Coast Conference loss to Chaffey College Wednesday at the Aquatic Center. The Lancers dropped out of a 3-way, third-place tie in SCC play and saw their record fall to 8-13 and 3-3 in conference. Chaffey, the state's No. 8-ranked team, is 15-7 and 4-2. Hogue kept the Lancers in the contest with 14 saves, including a few spectacular blocks on short-range blasts from the Panthers, and added 3 steals. Chaffey scored with 2 seconds left in the first half on a shot by Kadee Patterson that upped its lead to 4-0. But Hogue, from Temple City High, followed with her bomb attempt to cut it to 4-1. The Lancers played strong defense in the second half and cut it to 5-2 on Merry Sanders' short shot goal with 4:11 remaining in the game. PCC's Anneke Forrest earlier hit the post on a penalty shot, but for the most part, the Pasadena offense struggled all game to get off strong shots. Overall, Chaffey was led by 3 goals from Ashley Dorrego and 2 by Patterson. "We again received an outstanding individual performance by Hannah," PCC Head Coach Terry Stoddard said. "She does so much besides just stop shots. We weren't ready for a couple of her long passes on breaks, which is too bad because they should have led to goals. We can play with a Chaffey and beat them, but only if our offense can start clicking." Hogue is third in the state in saves with 248 and her 53 steals leads the team (ninth in the state in that category). PCC's four sophomores, Sanders (team-best 27 assists), Jade Wilia (team-leading 47 goals), Shannon Adams (21 goals), and Matiana Coulson were honored in a public address ceremony before the game set up by Stoddard for the team's final home conference match. The team will host a non-conference, round-robin tournament on October 30. The Lancers next plays at SCC power Cerritos College Wednesday, October 27 in a 3 p.m. match.
