Lead Gone In a Flash For Men's Soccer
Thoughts of a victory danced in the heads of the winless Pasadena City College men's soccer team Friday when Francisco Castro scored a goal in the 56th minute. Castro, who flicked in a pass from Phillip Gutierrez off a throw-in by Justin Gener, gave the Lancers a rare lead in a South Coast Conference match at 2-1.
The Lancers had battled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit when Castro fed Lazaro Zuniga for his second goal in as many matches just two minutes into the second half. When Castro scored it caused the Lancers' bench to erupt in cheers and the Robinson Stadium crowd to feel good about PCC's comeback.
The cheering would stop, however, as Harbor scored the next three goals in a span of four minutes, taking a commanding 4-2 lead by the 63rd minute. The scoring spurt allowed the Seahawks to go on to post a 5-3 triumph over the hapless Lancers.
Last-place PCC fell to 0-14-1 and 0-6-1 in SCC play. Third-place LA Harbor is 10-3-2 and 5-2-1 in conference play.
Harbor was led by Eric Medina with 2 goals and an assist. PCC's Suren Shaginian scored the team's final goal (his third) on an assist by Devin Mix in the 85th minute. Castro (pictured) finished with a goal and an assist.
Pasadena goalie Iran Rodriguez made 8 saves.
It won't get any easier for the Lancers when they face defending state champion Cerritos College on Tuesday, October 27 in a 1 p.m. match at Robinson Stadium.
