Queens of Leon: Cerritos Forward Scores 5 Goals As Women's Soccer Falls, 6-0
Only minutes after watching the men's soccer team give up six goals in a half, the Pasadena City College women's soccer team did the exact same thing in the first half of its 6-0 loss to Cerritos College Tuesday afternoon at Robinson Stadium.
It was the Ruby Leon show for the first 45 minutes as the Cerritos freshman forward scored an amazing five goals and assisted on another against a dazed PCC defense.
Leon scored in the third and fifth minutes and tallied the hat trick in the 30th minute. That goal was a sight that show go on YouTube as Leon outraced two PCC defenders to reach the goalie box, stopped and made a 360-degree spin against another Lancer defender, firing at the end of the spin a blast into the upper part of the net. In the 38th minute, Leon scored her fifth goal (a Cerritos scoring record for one half) as she stole the ball from PCC goalie Yvette Hernandez inside the goalie box to net the easy goal.
In a Halloweenesque irony, the same play occurred in the men's game as the Lancers' goalie was pick-pocketed inside the box for a goal late in Pasadena's 8-0 loss to the male Falcons.
The Lancers seemed to play with more desire in the second half as Hernandez was able to make several strong saves, including a few on Leon. Hernandez finished with 9 saves. PCC nearly scored in the 85th minute, but Melissa Fudge's shot rang off the post.
PCC was blanked for the third consecutive match, and eighth time this season. The Lancers dropped to 6-8-1 overall and 3-5-1 in conference. Cerritos, the defending state champion, is on an 8-game winning streak where it has outscored opponents, 36-0. The Falcons are 15-1 overall and 8-1 in SCC play.
Pasadena next faces host East Los Angeles College Friday, October 30 at 6 p.m.
