Men's Basketball Opens 2009-10 Season Saturday At Canyons Tourney
Returning All-South Coast Conference First Team forward Elliott Berry (pictured) leads the Pasadena City College men's basketball team into the 2009-2010 season Saturday, November 7 when the Lancers face Cuyamaca in the first round of the Clash at Canyons Tournament held at College of the Canyons.
Tip-off for that game is 4 p.m.
Head Coach Mike Swanegan begins his third season behind the Lancers bench after his team totaled 22 victories (two by forfeit) last campaign.
Only the 6-foot-7 Berry, who averaged 15.3 points and 7.1 rebounds a game last season, and reserve forward Devin Rhodes (1.6 points, 1.8 rebounds in limited play) are back from that squad.
Two players from two seasons ago are returning, though, in center Greg Harvey (8.6 points and 5.5 rebounds averaged in 2007-08) and guard William Rosary. A key sophomore transfer will be guard Jordan Block, who averaged 11.2 points and 4.2 rebounds at Chaffey College in '07-08.
The team's freshmen class is paced by 5-foot-9 point guard Demaree Hampton, a MVP of his league and an All-San Francisco City First Team selection from Mission High. Hampton averaged 23 points, 6 assists and 6 steals a game as a senior.
Swanegan added former PCC men's head basketball coach Nicolas Colon (2006-2007) as an assistant coach to aid with returning assistant Jesse Ellis.
