Sellers Hits Jumper To Send Women's Cagers Over Cypress, 65-62 image

Sophomore center Cherisa Sellers drilled a turnaround jumper with 21 seconds left to break a 62-62 tie and send the Pasadena City College women's basketball team to a 65-62 semifinals win over Cypress College Saturday night on the second day of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic. All games at the PCC-hosted, season-opening tournament are played at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

PCC (2-0) faces Chaffey, a 61-60 winner over LA Southwest, in the Hilton championship game Sunday, November 8 at 4 p.m. It's the third straight year, the Lancers have advanced to the Hilton title game, losing the past two years against City College of San Francisco.

The Lancers and Cypress, who have played epic playoff games in the past including a state championship final won by the Chargers in 2005, were tied 60-60 until Dominique Scott's layup gave PCC the lead with 1:17 left.

After Sellers big basket, Cypress guard Quortlyn O'Neal came up short on a jump shot that Sellers pulled down the defensive rebound with 3.5 seconds left. Sellers would hit a free throw for the game's final point.

In other final games Sunday, LA Southwest plays Cypress in the third place game at 2 p.m. after Southwestern and LA Valley face-off for the consolation title at 12 noon. In other tourney games played Saturday, LA Valley downed Taft, 70-60, and Southwestern upended San Diego City, 70-61.
