French 2 Goals In Women's Soccer Rout At Compton, 6-1
Putting the ball in the net has been a chronic problem for the Pasadena City College women's soccer team this season. That is except when the Lancers face South Coast Conference newcomer El Camino College Compton Center. PCC has taken full advantage of playing a program that was renewed this year after being dormant for several years at Compton.
Pasadena mounted its second-highest scoring effort of the year Tuesday in a 6-1 win over the Tartars at Compton. PCC had earlier this year posted a 7-1 victory over Compton. The Lancers have scored just 19 goals in 17 matches against other opponents.
PCC (8-10-1 and 5-7-1 in SCC matches) was led by forward Heather French with her first two goals of the year. French (from Village Christian High) scored the team's final two goals, including the last one on a cross pass from midfielder Alexa Weigand in the 69th minute. It was the sophomore Weigand's team-leading sixth assist.
In the 23rd minute, Weigand would open the game's scoring on an 18-yard blast for her third goal of the year. Just five minutes later, Lisa Kelley (Monrovia High) scored her fourth unassisted. Claudia Garcia (Garfield High) would do the same with a goal in the 41st minute (her second). Only a minute into the second half, Analuisa Castro (La Salle High) picked up her first goal of 2009.
Yvette Hernandez (Sante Fe High) made 4 saves and only allowed a goal on a penalty kick by Compton late in the first half.
The Lancers close out the season Friday, November 13 when they play a 1 p.m. game against Long Beach City College at PCC's Robinson Stadium.
