Women's Basketball Sees 15-Game Win Streak Snapped
The defending state champion Pasadena City College women's basketball team had a 15-game winning streak dating back to last season snapped in a 72-68 loss to Mt. San Jacinto in the opening round of the College of the Desert Thanksgiving Tournament Friday.
The Lancers are 5-1 overall this season as they lost for the first time since a 64-63 defeat against Los Angeles City College on Jan. 30. They also saw an impressive road winning streak broken at 19 games, a string that nearly lasted a whole year. The last time PCC lost a game not at its home court (Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium) was a 59-57 setback at Fullerton College on Dec. 5, 2008.
One more mini streak went down in the loss as PCC had won the championship in each of its last five previous tournaments (including the CCCAA state title).
Finally, the last time Pasadena was beaten in the first round of a tournament was the 2006 CCCAA quarterfinals against San Joaquin Delta College. PCC won at least its first round game in each of the last 19 straight tournaments dating back to that year.
Mt. San Jacinto, 4-0, was led by guard Danielle Smith with 31 points. The Eagles made 28 of 44 free throws with Smith making 9-for-12.
