Sports in the NewsHampton Powers Men's Basketball Past LA Harbor, 77-73
Freshman guard Shawn Hampton scored 26 points and helped rally the Pasadena City College men's basketball team to its fourth win in the last six games in a 77-73 triumph at Los Angeles Harbor College Wednesday night. The Lancers (5-11 overall) trailed Harbor by as much as nine points, but cut it to four by halftime, 37-33, on a Hampton 3-pointer with three seconds to go in the period. Hampton went to work in the second half as his scoop shot-and-one free throw gave PCC a 55-52 lead with 11 minutes remaining. After a few lead changes, Hampton's 10-foot bank shot the Lancers into the lead for good, 63-62, with 4:35 left. A 9-2 spurt with Block completing a 3-point play and Hampton making a spin move for a layup increased that advantage to 69-62. LA Harbor (7-10) cut it to 73-71, but Hampton finished off his brilliant evening by sinking a 3-point bomb as the shot clock expired with 16 seconds remaining in the contest. PCC Head Coach Michael Swanegan played just seven of his nine players with Hampton making 9-for-18 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. The Dorsey High product added four rebounds and four assists. Block, a sophomore transfer guard, added 22 points, including three 3-pointers as he made 8-for-14 from the field. Block made 3 of the team's 8 blocked shots on defense. Freshman forward Marcus Harvey added 11 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks in a strong all-around effort. Sophomore forward Elliott Berry contributed 8 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Despite outrebounding Pasadena, 48-33, and utilizing 12 of its 14-player roster, LA Harbor could not maintain its early control. The Seahawks were led by center De'jon Prescott with 19 points and 9 rebounds. PCC prepares now for its 8-game, SCC North Division schedule, beginning at El Camino College-Compton Center on Friday, Jan. 15 in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
