Women's Hoops Stretch Win Streak To 9 With Rout Over ECC
How do you improve when your team is already on a winning streak? That was an important question that Pasadena City College women's basketball coach Joe Peron asked his players going into the Lancers' final pre-divisional game Wednesday night at El Camino College.
The defending state champion Lancers had played uneven basketball in their previous victory over LA Southwest, making a season-high 33 turnovers and shooting below 50 percent from the free throw line as a team. Against the host Warriors, PCC cut down the turnovers (21) and had its emphasis on free throw shooting in practices pay off by converting 74 percent of their line attempts (17-for-23).
The improvements resulted in a 73-42 rout over El Camino, extending the Lancers' current winning streak to nine games. PCC is 16-2 overall. ECC dropped to 3-12.
The Lancers made the most of their possessions, hitting 56.3 percent on 27 of 48 shooting from the field. In the second half, PCC didn't miss much on the visiting Torrance floor. Leading 31-17 at halftime, the Lancers sank 10-for-12 on free throws and dropped in 15-of-23 from the field in running away with the win.
Sophomore guard Kim Smith tallied 16 points while freshman center Dominique Scott had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Scott was 5-for-5 from the line after missing 4 free throws in the previous game. Frosh guard Anna Shahinian added 12 points, hitting 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Melissa Fudge added 8 points (4-for-4 from the field) as PCC's bench totaled 20 points, another area of team improvement.
Katie Nelson had 6 points in a rare start at forward, starting guard Stephanie DeFrance scored 6, and reserve Tiffany Deramus contributed 5. El Camino was paced by Carla Shaw with 15 points.
PCC begins the 8-game, South Coast Conference North Division schedule Friday, Jan. 15 when the Lancers travel to El Camino College-Compton Center for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
