Men's Cagers Rally, But Can't Catch Mt. SAC, 91-86
The Pasadena City College men's basketball team nearly caught first-place and state No. 7-ranked Mt. San Antonio, but the Lancers' late rally fell short in a 91-86, South Coast Conference North Division defeat Wednesday night in Walnut.
With three players reaching the 20-point mark, the Lancers rallied from as much as 18 points down in the second half. Elliott Berry's 3-point bomb cut the score to 86-84 with 44 seconds left. Mt. SAC responded by taking the next 25 seconds off the clock before Demarkus Isomjones hit a jumper, preventing the Lancers from a potential game-tying basket.
Mt. SAC improved to 19-4 overall and lead the SCC North at 3-0. The Lancers fell to 6-14 and 1-3 in conference games.
Pasadena was led by frosh guard Shawn Hampton with 27 points, including a hot 10-for-14 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. The sophomore forward Berry added 26 points and 7 rebounds (8-for-11 from the line) while sophomore forward Jordan Block contributed 20 points and 7 rebounds, making 7-of-8 at the charity stripe.
Overall, the Lancers made 24-of-37 from the line, the same total as Mt. San Antonio. The teams also were even in rebounds, 41-41, but PCC made 9 more turnovers than the Mounties, 29-20, a difference that hurt the Lancers in the end.
Mt. SAC's Antonio Bigelow led all scorers with 30 points and Isomjones added 18 points.
For PCC, freshman forward Marcus Harvey had his streak of doubles-doubles snapped at three games in being limited to 6 points and 4 rebounds.
PCC led briefly, 35-34, on a Berry free throw with 3:16 remaining in the first half. Mt. SAC regained the lead, 41-40, by halftime.
The Lancers look to get back on the winning track when it hosts El Camino College-Compton Center on Friday, February 5 in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
