For five innings, Pasadena City College starting pitcher Samantha Gontol shut down the bats of Los Angeles Valley College in hurling the Lancers to a 2-0 lead. In the sixth inning, the Monarchs caught up to Gontol's fastballs and dropped a 5-spot on PCC, leaving Brookside Park with a 5-2, non-conference victory Friday afternoon.

The Lancers dropped to 3-7 overall. PCC won just one of four games to finish a homestand. LA Valley evened its record at 5-5-1.

Gontol retired the first nine batters she faced, striking out the side in the second inning. She was staked to a 2-0 lead thanks to a booming, RBI double to left by third baseman Amber Frame in the first inning, and a perfectly executed double steal in the fifth inning with outfielder Kristen Miranda taking home after pinch runner Nichole Duran drew a throw while swiping second base.

In the sixth, Gontol (2-4 record) seemed to tire as LA Valley responded with 5 hits and 5 runs to turn the game around. Monarchs first baseman Stephanie Ortega delivered the big blow on a 2-run triple to right center. Overall, Gontol allowed 7 hits in 6 innings, walking none and striking out 7. Reliever Jenna Martin pitched a 1-2-3, seventh inning.

Miranda, a freshman from Baldwin Park High, was PCC's top hitter as she batted 2-for-3 with 2 stolen bases. LA Valley pitcher Belen Benitez (3-3) limited the Lancers to 5 hits overall.

In a South Coast Conference game played Feb. 16 at Brookside Park, the defending state champion Mt. San Antonio College Mounties handed the Lancers their third straight conference defeat, 4-1.

Mt. SAC pitchers Alexa Limon and Ashley Voller held PCC's offense to 3 hits, including a RBI single by leftfielder Brianna Casillas. For the Lancers, Martin pitched a complete-game, 5-hitter, but was the hard-luck losing hurler.

PCC next plays at El Camino College Tuesday, Feb. 23 in a 3 p.m. conference game.
