Bizarre Season-Opening Loss For Women's Badminton

Bizarre Season-Opening Loss For Women's Badminton image

How does a team win all eight of its matches and still lose? That was the case for the defending South Coast Conference champion Pasadena City College women's badminton team in its March 3 season-opener at El Camino College.

Due to last-second administrative eligibility issues, the Lancers only had three players qualified for the team's match v. the Warriors. The PCC trio of Iris Xu, Amber Turner, and Anne Mosching proceeded in combining to win all six singles and two doubles matches. Despite PCC scoring the maximum 10 team points, El Camino, with its full six-player ladder, received forfeits in all other matches to secure an odd 11-10 victory over the Lancers.

Turner, a freshman from Pasadena High, won both her singles and teamed with Xu to win a pair of doubles.

PCC Head Coach Bill Sanchez was relieved to find that his full roster was finally officially eligible for the next match on March 5 as PCC rolled past host East Los Angeles College, 17-4.

Pasadena (1-1 record) was led by Xu, a freshman from China, who at No. 1 singles recorded victories over ELAC's No. 1 Ruth Wei, 21-19, 21-14, and a tough one v. Lisa Vittayarukskul, 21-6, 20-22, 21-15.

PCC's No. 3 player Jewy Liang (freshman, Alhambra High) won singles matches over Summer Jiang, 21-13, 21-12, and Amber Wel, 21-4, 21-4. Liang then teamed with Anna Tom (also first-year player from Alhambra) in No. 2 doubles to score wins over ELAC's top team of Wel-Vittayarukskul, 21-18, 21-19, and No. 2 Jiang and Maria Delgado, 21-6, 21-8.

PCC's No. 4 and returning sophomore Hoang Quach (pictured) pulled out singles wins over Jiang, 21-11, 19-21, 22-20, and Wel, 21-7, 21-7. Number 5 player Thoa Huynh (freshman, Gabrielino HS) slipped past Delgado, 21-18, 21-19, and defeated Christina Flores, 21-5, 21-6. Lancers' No. 6 player Mosching (freshman from Switzerland) upended Delgado, 21-7, 21-17, and beat Flores, 21-6, 21-2. Huynh-Mosching won its only doubles match over Wel-Flores, 21-14, 21-9.

PCC Head Coach Bill Sanchez is carrying 13 players on the 2010 roster. Pasadena next plays El Camino College-Compton Center Wednesday, March 10 in a 3 p.m. conference match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
