Women's Basketball Hopes For Repeat Of State Title
Today marks the seventh consecutive appearance by the Pasadena City College women's basketball team at the CCCAA Championship Final 8 Tournament. The Lancers are the defending state champions and come into the tourney as the No. 4 seed from the South Region.
PCC faces North No. 1 City College of San Francisco and kicks off the tournament quarterfinals at 1 p.m. today. For the first time since 2005, the tournament is being played in the South at Cal Lutheran University's Gilbert Arena in Thousand Oaks. Last year's state title was celebrated on the floor of Selland Arena in Fresno.
The Lancers and CCSF have become familiar opponents, including last year's thrilling 95-93 overtime win by Pasadena. A game that wasn't decided until 3 seconds left in OT on a rebound and basket by forward Allegra Kohley. San Francisco had twice played in PCC's season tip-off tournament and won in both 2007 and 2008, beating the Lancers in the title game each time.
If PCC wins today's quarterfinal, the Lancers would face the winner of the 7 p.m. Ventura (South No. 2) v. Laney (North No. 3) contest. South No. 1 Fullerton v. North No. 4 Chabot (5 p.m.) and North No. 2 Chabot v. South No. 3 Mt. San Antonio round out the quarterfinal bracket. Since the tournament is run for both the women and men, the semifinals will not take place until Saturday, March 13. Tip-off for that game is 3 p.m.
The championship game is set for Sunday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
"We're ready, and now it's just a matter of staying poised and working hard to go after the big prize," PCC Head Coach Joe Peron said. "It would be a great thing to repeat, but it's one step at a time. Everything we are doing is focused on trying to beat San Francisco. We get a day off in between, so we'll worry about the next opponent when that time comes."
