Sports in the NewsSoftball Outplayed By Antelope Valley, 11-4
The Pasadena City College softball team saw its season record drop to 7-15 after sufferering an 11-4, non-conference loss to Antelope Valley College Monday at Brookside Park. The Lancers were outhit, 15-10, in the slugfest that lasted two hours. AVC improved to 13-7 on the season. Pasadena has lost four straight games. For PCC, sophomore first baseman Kimberly Garcia batted 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, while second-year third baseman Amber Frame and letterman second baseman Lupita Contreras each were 2-for-4. Sophomore leftfielder Brianna Casillas came off the bench to hit a RBI triple in the sixth inning. PCC Head Coach Elaine Martinez yanked her frosh starting pitcher Jenna Martin before she could get out of the first inning. Martin allowed 2 runs. Freshman reliever Samantha Gontol pitched the last 6-1/3 innings, but didn't fare better, allowing 12 hits, 7 earned runs and walking 4 batters. Martin took the pitching loss. AVC turned three double plays defensively against the Lancers. In a South Coast Conference game played Mar. 11 at Mt. San Antonio, the Lancers scored 4 runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie it 5-5, but the Mounties scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on a 2-RBI double by catcher Heather Harrison to beat PCC, 7-5. Frame, who pitched the complete game, batted 2-for-3. On Mar. 9 at Brookside Park, Frame was outdueled by Long Beach City College hurler Renee Caballero in a 3-0 Lancers' loss. Frame twirled a 5-hitter, allowing just 2 earned runs and striking out 4. Caballero limited PCC to just 4 hits, including a fifth-inning triple by Garcia. Martinez issued the news that both Gontol and freshman shortstop Tiffany Rubin were named to the All-Golden West Tournament Team (Mar. 5-6).
