Sports in the NewsSanders Is Merry In Swim/Dive At PCC-Hosted Double Dual Meet
Sophomore Merry Sanders swam a season-best 2:07.75 to win the 200-yard freestyle, then captured the 1-meter diving victory to highlight the Pasadena City College swim teams' performance in a double dual meet v. Cerritos and LA Trade Tech Colleges held at PCC's Aquatic Center Friday. Sanders trailed most of the field during much of the 200-free, then picked up speed over the final leg to edge Angie Silva of Cerritos (2:08.92). In the diving competition, she totaled 148.9 points to outdistance Falcons' diver Nicole Pena (118.9). The Lancers split the women's team results, defeating LA Trade Tech, 109-20, but losing to Cerritos, 87-44. On the men's side, it was similar results with PCC beating the Beavers, 100-25, but falling to the Falcons, 84-47. Besides Sanders, Cindy Huynh was the only other Lancer woman to record an event win as she captured the 50-yard freestyle with a 28.74 seconds mark. Shannon Adams lost a heartbreaker to Brittani Kimura (Cerritos) in the 500-freestyle, edged at the wall, 5:42.09 to 5:42.17. Huynh also took second in a tough one during the 100-free when she touched at 1:03.62, just behind Cerritos' Gina Kim at 1:03.48. In men's races, the 200-yard medley relay of Sharif Alaoui, Baldwin Ngai, Enrique Flores and Cord Cuniberti swam a 1:42.19 winning time. Ngai would record wins in the 100-breaststroke (1:00.32) and 200-breaststroke (2:08.92). Alaoui emerged with victories in the 200-freestyle (1:59.79) and 200-backstroke, an exciting finish where his 1:59.78 was a mad dash for the wall to slip past Cerritos swimmer PJ Gabayeron (1:59.94). Andrew Genova turned in a strong swim in the 500-free, taking second at 5:03.29, just behind Cerritos' Matt Mendoza (5:02.94). The Lancers' men's team is 4-3 overall in dual meets and 3-2 in SCC competition. The PCC women are 3-4 and 2-3.
