Women Track's van der Wyk Wins 1,500 At AVC Invitational
After having one of the best cross country seasons ever performed by an individual at this college in 2009, Pasadena City College freshman Tracee van der Wyk is continuing her success on the PCC women's track and field team this year.
Van der Wyk (pictured in a recent meet) won the 1,500 meters race at the Antelope Valley College Invitational April 2-3. Her time of 4:46.23 was enough to edge out Glendale's Rosa Del Toro (4:47.87).
Her 4:41.21 winning mark at the Mar. 26 RCC Open (Riverside) is the fourth fastest time in the state this season. Del Toro is currently third on that same state listing.
Also at AVC, van der Wyk placed second in the 800 meters at 2:18.57. In that event, the distance specialist is fourth in the state after her 2:17.80 against 4-year university runners at the Occidental Distance Carnival held Mar. 12.
Of all of her exceptional races, it was her state's fastest mark in the 10,000 meters, a time of 38:42.42, at the Occidental meet that truly stands out. At the Ben Brown Invitational (Cal State Fullerton) Mar. 6, her 17:57.48 time in the 5,000 meters was the best community college mark at the event, going up against top university racers, and fourth fastest thus far in the state.
Men's Track and Field Update
Richard Zarazua placed second in the 1,500 meters at the Antelope Valley Invitational with a time of 4:00.99. He also grabbed fifth in the 800 meters at 1:57.82. Ernesto Rodriguez finished fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:17.55).
At the RCC Open, Zarazua won the 1,500 meters at 4:01.17 and was a close second in the 800 meters (his current individual best of 1:56.18).
The only PCC men's team athlete on the state's top 10 fastest/most lists is Isaiah Sims, who won the 200 meters at a Mar. 5 Cerritos College meet with a time of 21.78. He is 10th currently in the state in that event.
