Two Straight SCC Team Titles For PCC Badminton
The Pasadena City College women's badminton team collected its second straight South Coast Conference championship Wednesday with a 21-0 sweep over East Los Angeles at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
The Lancers won their 11th consecutive conference match, and recorded a shutout for the seventh time in SCC play. PCC (11-1) will play two more non-conference matches and then face the top Orange Empire Conference squad in the Southern California Regional Championship match on Wednesday, May 5.
PCC Head Coach Bill Sanchez was pleased with his entire ladder of players, including how the squad stayed determined to win in the matches that were stretched to three sets. Amber Turner, in the No. 4 singles spot, scored a 21-13, 18-21, 21-9 win over ELAC's No. 3 Summer Jiang. Lancers No. 2 Jewy Jiang defeated Huskies' No. 2 Lisa Vittayarukskul, 21-9, 15-21, 21-14. In No. 2 doubles, JK Nguyen-Le (pictured) and Jiang also went the distance to beat ELAC's No. 1 squad of Ruth Wei and Vittayarukskul, 21-14, 20-22, 21-10.
"We played extremely well, and stayed focused," Sanchez said. "We're excited to win back-to-back conference titles. It seems our depth has paid off. Our players just don't want to lose a point. It's easy to have a letdown in a 3-set match. The hard part is recovering your game enough to take that all-important third set. We just seem to want it more than the opponents in those matches."
Iris Xu, Jiang, Nguyen-Le, Turner, Jessica Chan and Anne Mosching all won 2 matches in singles. In doubles, Xu-Turner and Nguyen-Le-Jiang took 2 matches and the team of Chan and Hong Quach captured their only doubles match to complete the PCC sweep.
PCC won its second conference title of the 2009-2010 sports season (also captured the championship for the first time in women's volleyball). The badminton program won the title for the seventh time in 11 seasons. Sanchez has two of those titles in three seasons running the Lancers.
On Friday, April 23, the Lancers travel to face Grossmont College in a non-conference match.
