Women's Trackster van der Wyk Speeds to Top State Times At Beach Invitational
Pasadena City College women's track and field team freshman Tracee van der Wyk stunned 4-year university runners with three tremendous races at the Beach Invitational held at Cerritos College April 17.
Van der Wyk ran the fastest state community college times of the year in both the 800 and 1,500 meters. She also had the state's second fastest mark in the 5,000 meters.
In the 1,500, van der Wyk raced a 4:30.03 mark in heat No. 2, losing by just 1.18 seconds to a runner from Mexico (Anayelli Navarro). Her mark was better than runners from such big-name universities as Nebraska, USC, Iowa State, Notre Dame and Air Force.
In the 800, she won the fourth heat with a blistering state-high mark of 2:14.38. In the 5,000, she closed fast for a 17:42.63 time, just getting beat at the wire by Northern Arizona's Lisette Michaels (17:42.11). van der Wyk (pictured) now has the state's premier times in three events, including her mark in the 10,000 meters earlier this year.
In men's track and field, freshman Richard Zarazua ran a 3:57.78 time in the 1,500 meters, which is the state's No. 5 best time. At the 52nd Mt. SAC Relays April 10, Zarazua entered the state's top 10 in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.54 (ninth in California).
