It was the Tracee van der Wyk distance festival at the South Coast Conference Track and Field Championships April 27 and May 1 at Mt. San Antonio College. The Pasadena City College freshman women's runner put on a clinic in endurance and versatility in willing the Lancers to a fourth place team finish at the conference finals meet.
Van der Wyk won the 1,500 meters title, easily taking first place at 4:39.52, almost eight seconds ahead of the next finisher. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, she captured second place with a hand time of 11:23.6. In the 800 meters, she also finished second with a mark of 2:15.16, just behind champion Danielle Low of LA Trade Tech (2:13.81).
In the 5,000 meters, van der Wyk crossed the line in fourth place at 18:26.27, and she duplicated that effort in the 10,000 meters as she posted a 38:13.49 time. In all, the Temple City High graduate scored 36 of the Lancers' 41 team points.
The only other Lancers to score points were Rebecca Nunez, a sixth place in the 1,500 meters (5:06.02), and Tasia Butler, a seventh in the 100 meters (12.84).
Currently, van der Wyk is rated in the top four in the state in four different events and now seventh in the 10,000 meters. She is second statewide in the 800 and 1,500, third in the steeplechase, and fourth in the 5,000 meters.
