Lancers Badminton Represents Well At State Individual Championships
As the host school of the 2010 CCCAA Women's Badminton State Championships, Pasadena City College wanted to make a mark in the individual singles and doubles competition. The Lancers did just that by placing high in three of the four categories of play in concluding their season May 14-15. The Lancers had opened the tourney May 13 in an epic 11-10 loss to City College of San Francisco in the state team title match.
Iris Xu and JK Nguyen-Le received third place medals in both championship singles and championship doubles as they each reached the semifinals in singles and teamed to reach the final four in doubles. Xu lost to eventual state singles champion Thuy Hoang of Irvine Valley, and the pair took a set from eventual state doubles champs in Hoang and her teammate Rena Phairojmahakij.
Freshman Jewy Liang captured the consolation singles title as she came back from a 1-0 set deficit to defeat Praadnya Shah of De Anza College, 18-21, 21-13, 21-15.
Xu-Nguyen-Le, both freshmen, nearly upended the Hoang-Phairojmahakij pair, but couldn't maintain the advantage in the championship semifinals, falling 17-21, 21-10, 21-15. Xu and Hoang were both undefeated players this season going into their singles semifinal, but it was Hoang who used a finesse game and some early mistakes by Xu to record a 21-10, 21-18 over PCC's top player.
Nguyen-Le, a hard-hitting left-hander, tried her best to make it into the finals, but San Diego City's Crisselda Vinluan outlasted the Lancer freshman, 22-20, 21-16.
In 11 years of the championships, PCC has never had a player reach either the singles or doubles championship final. Lancers' Head Coach Bill Sanchez noted though how impressive his team looked at this year's CCCAA event.
"We had four players make it into the semifinals, and all four were representing us in the two championship and two consolation matches," Sanchez said. "That's a tough feat to see that many players from the same team get that far. We didn't emphasize the individual singles or doubles because we were concentrating on the team championship. We finished as state runner-up and picked up a slew of medals in the individuals. People can look back at 2010 as a fantastic season for PCC badminton."
Pasadena's Anna Tom had also advanced to the consolation semifinals.
