Lancer Trackster van der Wyk Races To SoCal 1,500 Meter Title
Pasadena City College freshman Tracee van der Wyk continued her impressive season by winning the 1,500 meters title at the Southern California Track and Field Championships held Saturday at Mission Viejo's Saddleback College.
The talented racer finished the 1,500 with a winning time of 4:41.46, a 2.6 second gap ahead of the second place finisher. Van der Wyk, the winner of the 1,500 South Coast Conference title will try for the coveted triple at this week's CCCAA State Championships at Antelope Valley College (May 21-22). She already holds the fastest time in the state in the event.
Also at the SoCal Championships, van der Wyk was fifth in the 800 meters, her season-best 2:13.47. She was a disappointing 22nd in the 5,000 meters with a mark of 19:32.37 after running the state's fourth fastest mark of 17:42 in an April meet. Overall, her 1-person performance gave PCC an official tie for 15th in the SoCal team scoring.
In men's competition, Pasadena sprinter Isaiah Sims tied for fourth place in the 100 meter dash with a finals time of 10.60 seconds (he ran a 10.57 in the prelims). Richard Zarazua was sixth in the 1,500 at 3:58.73. Ernesto Rodriguez was sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase with a 9:31 even time. The combined 10 points scored gave the PCC men's team a tie for 21st place in team scoring.
PCC State Qualifier Update: van der Wyk will race in the women's 800 (4:20 p.m.) and 1,500 (3 p.m.); Sims in the men's 100 (4:10 p.m.), Zarazua in the men's 1,500 (3:10 p.m.) and Rodriguez in the men's 3,000 steeplechase (2:20 p.m.) on Saturday, May 22.
