Women's Soccer Opens SCC Play By Blanking Compton, 4-0
The Pasadena City College women's soccer team extended its winning streak to four matches, shutting out El Camino College-Compton Center, 4-0, Tuesday in the South Coast Conference opener for both teams at Robinson Stadium.
PCC has outscored opponents, 14-2, during the win streak. The Lancers are 5-1-1 overall.
Lisa Kelley scored the first of her two goals on a free kick from 25 yards out in the 37th minute.
Leading 1-0 for much of the game, PCC employed a different strategy late in the match and it resulted in three goals being scored in a 16-minute span. Kelley, moved from defender to midfielder only a minute earlier, picked up her second goal in the 70th minute. Two minutes later, Mallory Gutierrez took a shot that was rebounded by Stephanie Hernandez, who netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
With four minutes left in the match, Joleen Galeazzi-Pimentel made a wide pass to an open Alexandra Dreves for the team's final score.
"Compton did a good job of sagging its defenders," said PCC Head Coach Randy Lilavois. "We decided to go from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2, moving Kelley up to midfield. We realized that once Compton committed to one side, we needed to set up a play to an open player on the other side. That's what happened on Dreves' goal. We've endured some injuries, but both Hernandez and Dreves have stepped up on the offensive end."
The stingy PCC defense allowed just one shot against goalie Yvette Hernandez as the team recorded its second straight shutout. In the past 180 minutes, the Lancers have outscored their opponents, 10-0, outshooting LA Valley and Compton a combined 39-1.
The Lancers announced that sophomores Alyssa Becerra and Kimberly Cristobal will miss the remainder of the season due to injuries and should be able to return next year as medical redshirts.
On Friday, October 1, Pasadena travels to face Long Beach City College in a 2 p.m. conference match.
