Men's Soccer Still Solid On Defense, Earn 1-1 Draw At Long Beach
With a 1-1, South Coast Conference tie Friday at Long Beach City College, the Pasadena City College men's soccer team has allowed only seven goals in eight matches this season. The stingy PCC defense has helped the Lancers to a 4-1-3 start to the 2010 season and 1-0-1 conference beginning for first-year head coach Edgar Manvelyan.
In the 18th minute, Pasadena scored its lone goal on a breakaway by sophomore Rimar Daisley-West, who netted his first score of the year. Valentine Obinwa set up the score with a lead pass.
LBCC would get help on its tying goal in the 58th minute. A hand ball on PCC resulted in a penalty kick. Walter Cannavina knotted the score on a shot in the top left corner past diving Lancers' goalie Jorge Cervantes.
Pasadena had a late attempt foiled when Derek Olson managed to deke around LBCC goalie Luis Romero. However. Olson's ensuing shot was stopped by trailing Long Beach defender Richard Huezo just outside the goal line in the 75th minute.
Cervantes was credited with two saves overall for the Lancers.
PCC next visits Cerritos College for a 4 p.m. conference match Tuesday, October 5.
