PCC's van der Wyk Grabs 2nd; Zentmyer 17th at SoCal Preview Meet
Only eight seconds behind race champion Danielle Low of Los Angeles Trade Tech College, Pasadena City College women's cross country sophomore Tracee van der Wyk settled for second place overall at the SoCal Preview Meet Saturday at East Mission Bay Park in San Diego.
Van der Wyk ran a time of 18 minutes, 53 seconds in the 5-kilometer race. Only Low (18:45) and van der Wyk finished under 19 minutes. The season-best run by the letterman racer helped PCC capture 11th place as a team among 32 teams and 261 participants. Southwestern won the team title.
Freshman Raquele Cardozo complemented van der Wyk by placing 55th at 21:00. Also coming to the wire in the top 100 runners for PCC was Elizabeth Lyons in 90th at 21:41. Marissa Morales raced 109th (22:05), and she was followed by Cassandra Lew (115th, 22:14) and Natasha Nicholson (185th, 24:18).
In the men's 4-mile course run at the SoCal Preview meet, once again PCC was paced by Will Zentmyer, who placed 17th overall with a 21:25 mark as the Lancers finished the team scoring in 17th out of 30 teams.
Unfortunately for the Lancers, no other team runner finished in the top 100. Following Zentmyer was Herminio Flores in 106th (22:53). The rest of PCC's runners finished as follows: Esteven Zarazua (144th, 23:21), Chris Le (155th, 23:32), Alejandro Esparza (181st, 23:51), Gilbert Ramirez (224th, 24:39), and Enmanuel Vera (241st, 25:11).
David Cardona of El Camino College won the individual race (20:04) while Riverside City College won the team title.
PCC Coach Armand Crespo's teams now prepare for the big three races of the season, beginning with the South Coast Conference Championships on Friday, October 29 at Mt. San Antonio College.
