Women's Soccer Sound In 2-0 Win Over LA Harbor
Pasadena City College women's soccer head coach Randy Lilavois asked for a complete 90 minutes from his team going into Tuesday's South Coast Conference match against visting Los Angeles Harbor College. The Lancers answered with a combination of sound defense and executing plays on the offensive end in a 2-0 blanking over the Seahawks at Robinson Stadium.
The Lancers (6-3-2 overall, 2-1-2 in conference play) snapped a three-game winless string (a loss and two ties). LA Harbor is 4-6-2 and now 2-2-1 in SCC matches.
After a scoreless first half, PCC broke through in the 49th minute as Vania Ovando sent a perfectly placed free kick from the 30-yard line to reserve forward Mallory Gutierrez, who headed in the pass for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 69th minute, Gutierrez finished off a breakaway, sending a cross pass to Stephanie Hernandez, who fired in a one-timer blast for her team-best sixth goal. The score came moments after PCC goalie Yvette Hernandez stoned LA Harbor's Jenelle Donaldson on a breakaway attempt.
Yvette Hernandez was solid in recording her second shutout, making five saves, including a diving tip away in the 36th minute. Sophomore defenders Analuisa Castro, Amy Wallace and Lisa Kelley often broke up Harbor offensive opportunities.
"Our forwards and defenders really played well," Lilavois said. "We talked about how mistakes have hurt us in the past few matches. We didn't give up any late goals, and we pushed the play offensively when we needed to.
"Yvette did a nice job in goal. She made a spectacular save on a ball that would have been a goal for sure. Wallace felt she had not played her best effort last match v. Mt. San Antonio, but she stepped up and played great defense today. Castro and Kelley have been consistent all year in clearing the ball out in front our goalies."
PCC next plays at East Los Angeles College Friday, October 15 in a 4 p.m. SCC match.
