October Scoring Drought For Women's Soccer
The month of October hasn't been an easy time for the Pasadena City College women's soccer team. The Lancers have performed stellar defensively in the first half of South Coast Conference play, but putting the ball past opponent goalies has been a challenge. PCC totaled just seven shots on goal and settled for a 0-0 tie against El Camino College Tuesday in a South Coast Conference match at Robinson Stadium.
Since winning their conference opener, 4-0, v. ECC Compton Center on Sept. 28, the Lancers have scored just five goals in their last six SCC matches this month. The team is 1-2-3 in that stretch despite allowing only eight goals in those games.
Pasadena is 6-3-4 overall and 2-2-3 under first-year head coach Randy Lilavois. El Camino is 7-6-1 and 2-4-1 in SCC play.
The Lancers did extend a mini undefeated streak in home matches, now 3-0-2 in the past five on the Sprinturf of Robinson Stadium. Goalie Yvette Hernandez made six saves and preserved her second straight shutout. The sophomore was aggressive, frequently beating El Camino forwards to loose balls or potential breakaway attempts.
She had help again from sophomore defender Lisa Kelley, who put on a clinic with several clearing plays as she often got the Lancers out of harm's way.
PCC had few scoring chances, one a shot attempt over the cage by Alexandra Dreves in the 83rd minute. Mallory Gutierrez hit a shot earlier that glanced off the top of the crossbar in the 53rd minute. El Camino goalie Alicia Sala made four saves overall.
El Camino pressured the Lancers with nine shots on goal. The play of the game came in the 71st minute when the Warriors' Vanessa Reid brooke loose on a 1-on-1 with the goalie. Hernandez instinctively dove to secure the ball in the box just as Reid was about to take a short-range shot.
In a game played October 15 at East Los Angeles College, the Lancers were dealt a 3-1 loss by the Huskies. Dreves scored the team's lone goal on an assist by Vania Ovando. PCC goalie Sarah Wallick made four saves.
Pasadena travels to face El Camino College-Compton Center Friday, October 22 in a 2 p.m. conference match.
